Big, fast, playful and fun, the Lower New River is a whitewater roller coaster ride of towering, crashing waves. With more than 25 Class II to Class IV+ rapids, including thumpers like The Keeneys, Upper and Lower Railroad, Greyhound Bus-Stopper, and Double-Z, the Lower New offers enough thrills and adventure for any enthusiast. One of the oldest rivers in the world, the "New" cuts its bed from the rugged West Virginia hills, winding through the 1,000 foot gorge known far and wide as The Grand Canyon of the East -- a breathtaking sight in her spring, summer, or fall colors. Historic mining ghost towns pepper the gorge's walls. Calm pools between rapids give you a chance to take a swim, and to enjoy the awesome scenery and the abundance of wildlife... from beaver to cardinal flowers to whitetail deer. With friends from home or from the office, for one day or more, this is a memorable adventure for both the experienced and beginners. Revered by seasoned boaters and welcomed by novices, the Lower New River starts slow, builds momentum gradually and delivers some mighty punches - at all water levels. You are small in the vastness of the scenic and lush gorge. The rush of the rapids makes you feel otherwise. Commercially guided trips are required to use rafts on the Lower New and NARR offers two raft formats: Standard (maximum nine plus guide) and High Adventure (maximum five plus guide). If you have the time, the New River Overnight is highly recommended for a best of both worlds experience. Day One is paddling (usually) in duckies on part of the Upper New, camping alongside the river and continuing down the river in rafts on Day Two. If after rafting the Lower New you decide you want to take it up another notch, then you’ll receive a 25% discount for an additional day of rafting on the Gauley River. Besides the rapids, other features of the Lower New trip include an abundant river history, tall tales and floating under the New River Gorge Bridge. All Lower New trips are available April through October, have a minimum age of 12 and are rated PG. Morning or afternoon departures depend on trip variations. Click on trip for rates.
