There’s no better way to find mud than pedaling a mountain bike, and with more than 35 mapped miles of single-track and mining-era railroad grades crossing the heights and hollows of the New River Gorge you’ll have plenty of opportunity. Take the leisurely route and a low-impact spin along the river on the abandoned railroad grade between Thurmond and Cunard. You’ll pass old coke ovens and other remnants of the mining operations that gave the Gorge its first boom. More experienced riders might want to shoot the steep canyon walls on narrow single-track trails. Whatever your pleasure, you'll find top-of-the-line bikes from Specialized and Gary Fisher. You can suit up in proper cycling gear even if you didn’t bring your own. Rentals come with a trail map, and free advice on the best mud puddles.
