Think whitewater rafting is only for the extreme? Think again. Gentle and playful, the Upper New River is a wonderfully diverse section of river that appeals to all ages. Kids, teens, college students, parents, grandparents -- all can enjoy the Upper New together. Watch your 10-year-old granddaughter maneuver her own boat in one of the flat water sections. Meanwhile, chat carefree with your guide as she rows your oar-powered raft. Bask in the sun. Breathe deeply the fresh air of your breathtaking surroundings. Pull your boss back in his "ducky" (inflatable kayak) after Rudy's Ripple. Allow waves to crash over or under you. Cheer for your college roommate as he attempts to surf his first wave. Take a short hike to a waterfall or jump off the New River's notorious "jump rock." Or visit the historic Thurmond Depot. Relax on a leisurely two-day trip and camp right on the river under the stars. Perfect for family reunions, scout and church groups, and anyone who wants something a little different. This is the perfect starting point for anyone interested in a guided whitewater adventure. This is also a great place to gather your group, especially if you have a broad range in ages and abilities, yet want something most everyone can do together. Small river craft, called duckies, are challenging to learn to control and paddle through the small rapids. Paddling the duckies is encouraged and instruction is provided. This really is a fun way to negotiate this beautiful stretch of the river. The less adventurous may want to opt for a ride in the raft. Calm pools are interspersed between the rapids allowing opportunities to float and swim without the boat. Also, if you decide you really liked the river trip experience and want to take it up a notch, you’ll receive a 25% discount for your second day of rafting on the Lower New. The Upper New is available in a one- and two-day format. Both formats depart in the morning, are available April through Labor Day, have a minimum age of 5 and are rated G. The two-day trip involves camping alongside the river for one night. If you want to take a mini-vacation, then the Upper New Overnight trip is the trip of choice. All you need to bring is your personal gear, sleeping bag and pad, and we take care of the rest of the details. Click on trip for rates.
